    Default Cylinder head temp gauge

I don't think my cht is reading correctly. It starts at 200 cold. What do I need to do to test the gauge and probe?

A good start is to pull the probe and stick it in boiling water. That’s 212°F.

    Your gauge should read similar.

Here is the gauge it was warm but shouldn't show this hot..this was after sitting for about an hour and I didn't bring the engine to full temp.

Find out what brand and look up the troubleshooting criteria. There is usually a resistance parameter listed for the probe.

Does that gauge read degrees of Centigrade? Most thermocouples create voltage due to a reaction of dissimilar metals. So at 70 degrees F OAT you would see something like 10 millivolts. There is only two types J and K. You can tell which by the wire colors.

Thermistors are used in some of the newer systems. They measure resistance change as a function of heat

I will have to dig in and find out what model it is. It is in centigrade and it just has the probe that is attached under the #3 spark plug.

Spark plug gasket probes are always off. Normally 50 degrees F. Centigrade, spark plug probe, just guessing but probably not approved.

Just curious, is that an adjusting screw in the lower center? If turning it to the left lowers the needle reading, (emphasis on IF) you could adjust it to approximately the ambient temperature, then place the probe in boiling water and see if it reads (around) 210 degrees.

Edit: I see (now) that it is reading Celsius. If my 6th grade math class stuck with me, I guess that means it should read 100 degrees in boiling water.

I must be blind because I never noticed the screw. But it doesn’t get much higher when engine is at temp so for now even if it adjusts,I don’t think it will do much good.
