    Default Firewall questions

I'm putting a 56' Tri-Pacer back together an was hoping for some tips/insight. I bought a new stainless steel firewall from the cub doctor (it's beautiful) http://cubdoctor.com/stainless-firewalls/index.html .

    Two questions to start,

    1. The firewall does includes a "flange". Does this flange fulfill the requirements of SB 161A https://www.univair.com/content/PIP_SB0161A.pdf piper part number 754 237? Univair sells it now as 3 separate parts (nearly $450 total)
    https://www.univair.com/piper/piper-...-moulding-top/

    2. I also need a firewall blanket. I found this at Spruce https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catal...rewallsets.php . Any opinions on it? Should I add a heat barrier or sound deadening behind the blanket?

    Thanks,
    Dave

I too replaced the firewall of a 56 Tri-pacer and used the Clyde Smith firewall. To answer your question, the flange on the firewall is to mount the boot cowl, and does not meet SB 161A. I installed the 3 piece molding around the firewall to comply with the SB. As for the firewall pad I bought mine from Airtex https://www.airtexinteriors.com/ and it fit well and looks good.

    Hope it turns out well,

    Steve

Exactly what Steve said. I bought the molding from univair, extremely over priced

Concur with above. The firewall flange faces forward, and the boot cowl attaches to it. Flammable fluids can migrate through this interface and cause a fire hazard. The SB parts are a U channel that covers this interface making it much harder for fluids to get behind the firewall.

There are some pictures of the flanges that do away with inspection called out in AD 57-22-01 in this thread. https://www.shortwingpipers.org/foru...spection/page2
