    Default Cable jumping pulleys

When you open the rear passenger door, along the bottom of the door opening there is a (rudder?) cable and two pulleys, one to the left and one to the right. This cable keeps jumping off these pulleys and staying off then. It doesn’t have a lot of tension and seems to slack when moving the controls left and right. I assume the slack is normal, but this slack is causing the cable to jump the pulleys and there is nothing to stop it from doing so. The cable then gets stuck between the pulleys and their mounting bracket. I wish I took pictures... I can on Friday if necessary. Any ideas on what to do?

Have your mechanic look at it.
The cable tension needs adjustment by someone experienced in that.
    Don't fly it that way.

The only tension is the friction of the nose wheel in the rudder system. Cables go between the bracket and the pulley so it is captured.

Ok, well there is room for it to come off the pulley. And your saying there shouldn’t be tension? I don’t have a local mechanic so if I can’t figure this out I don’t know what to do

I am also getting rust looking deposits out of my left fuel tank wing sump. Every time I check it there is usually about 5-10 rust looking flakes. Any ideas here?

I will take pictures on Friday and post them, but my pulley has plenty of room for the cable to come off. After closer look, your pulley has a guard and mine don’t seem to...

Steve, that pulley in the top pic looks like it's worn heavily on the right side (as we look at it)....are you allowed to bend the mounds to bring it into better alignment, or what other things can you do to improve alignment?

One of my projects for this year during annual is to remove clean and lubricate every pulley in the system.....no record of it ever being done on my plane.

The "Williams Toe Brake" STC calls for 15# rudder cable tension on my PA22

Can you put tension on the rudder cable by using a different hole on the attachment at the rudder? If I remember there should be 5 holes in a stagered pattern at the rudder and you can shorten the cable by using a different hole.

    Hope this helps,

    Steve
