    Wow, Piper must have built both of your planes 'bare bones' and then later decided to replace that low amp gen with the 20A. I sure have a lot to learn about these old planes. I don't have to but I cannot help it. Right now its making me late for work!

    Aviation was simpler back in the 40s and 50s, not a mess like today. Aircraft manufacturers kept it simple, built planes with good parts from cars and tractors. They just used what was available and worked well.

    I don't know who rewired my airplane when they did the tailwheel conversion and recover but... Not only were the fuel gauges not working because they were wired up wrong but the Ammeter has 5 wires coming off of it. It should have 2 (it doesn't have a cigar lighter). I haven't traced them out yet but think it might explain why it never worked. I am going to have to go hand over hand through the whole plane to sort it out.
