    Default External data plate?

My Tri-Pacer has a small external data plate on the left side fuselage under the horizontal stabilizer. It has make and model number, serial number, and N number on it. Was this original equipment from the factory? Is it required to be there legally?

It's a newer legal requirement. I can't site the exact source but we added one to our airplane also.

I believe it was required sometime after 9-11 by Homeland Securit (DEA). 😎 Had to be installed behind the rear most door and visible on the ground. It was about the time they wanted people and the CAP to report airplanes with mud and grass stains. Paranoia that such airplanes were most probably running drugs from grass strips.

My understanding is the external data plate is only needed for crossing international borders. Some states may require it too..

14 CFR 45.11(e) requires the model and serial number to be on the aircraft aft of the aft most entry door and visible from the ground. I normally put it on the belly just forward of the tailwheel! The regulation came out in 1987. Earlier guidance said it wasn’t required to be a plate, but could be painted on or using some other suitable marking that would not be defaced in day to day operations. I’ve used Dymo label tapes. All that is required in the model and serial, no labels or anything else.

did your really mean to say you put it on the belly, seems like you'd have to get on ground to look up at the belly.
Maybe you meant the lower aft fuselage near the tailwheel.

    Default External data plate?

Nope, I said on the belly and mean that. The only purpose for it is DEA checking for drug trafficking. The regulation says visible from the ground, any SOB looking for it is going to have to get down on the ground to see it!
