Default 160 Hp Tri Pacer Carb Inlet Temperature

    Dear fellow Short Wingers,

The Carb Inlet temperature as always considerably higher than the OAT. Brand new installed OAT and Carb Inlet Probes and new EI instrument so that is not it.
Suspect that the "Valve" in the airbox is leaking hot air. Has anybody been able to seal this properly? Is a new airbox going to fix this?
Are there alternative STCed airboxes on the market for the O-320 Tri Pacers?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Have you checked the flapper valve to see if it is closing all the way? Might just be the heat from the oil sump just above the carb.

Hi Steve! Thank you for the pointer. The flapper valve does touch top and bottom of the airbox in either position. The temp probe sits just above the flapper valve hinge in the air box so I am unsure that with the amount of air going through, the temperature of the oil sump may have an effect although I must say the longer the engine runs, the bigger the temp difference between OAT and Air Box.

I would disconnect the AirBox hot air hose from muffler shroud and see what the temperature does. That will insure you are not getting hot air from the carb heat system.

Carb air temp probe should be installed in the carburetor throat. Never seen one installed in a carb air box.

We installed one in the AirBox and one in the throat when doing the flight testing for the Constant Speed Prop 0-360 A1P STC… FAA required a 90 degree temp rise when applying carburetor heat for de icing... took a lot to get that to happen..
