Re: 57A going back together
So I went down today and it's still holding the 3-1/2" of chrome... but dang, I forgot to check that yellow cap for the seal inside. Next time.
And yes, I used a wrench, but it was only a 5" wrench (choked up in my hand) and I was careful to not overdo it, just enough to make it tight, tighter than I could with my fingers.... Yeah, I know, I have no way to know how much torque I actually put on it. I doubt I could get it off with my fingers, but it should only require a quick bump with a wrench to get it loose.
And thanks again for your input!

Re: 57A going back together
Update(s): Apparently it was the valve core in the valve; no further evidence of leaking, and 3-1/2" of chrome has been consistent. There are both the rubber o-ring seal and the brass tube piece that it goes around present inside the yellow valve cap.
The other thing Andy & I have been working on was re-shaping the right side steering link to gain clearance around the exhaust tailpipe and a section of the frame. It had been heated & bent before, I'm assuming when the dual toe-brakes were installed, but it had always been a terrible fit.
I started out with 5/16" soft copper to get the general idea, switched to 5/8" soft copper (same OD as the link) through two iterations to finalize the shape. It was nice to have the materials, tools and skills left over from my days in refrigeration to take this on! Finally, I then heated and got the original steel link straight and then re-set with the new shape.
Now ready to re-install the finished link, re-attach the bottom cowl, and try again for initial engine start. Man, this is a slow process!

Re: 57A going back together
It’s a slow process if you do it right and don’t cut corners, but you’re almost there.

Re: 57A going back together
And so now I've got a stripped-out nut plate on one of the chin cowl screws in the flange on the firewall, at the bottom. They seem to be a weird (tall) floating-type. I can't seem to find anything like that looking online -- have they been superseded by another type? Any suggestions as to what's best here?
Apologies for the pic -- it's an enlargement...

Re: 57A going back together
Got the nut plate (it wasn't a floater) replaced today. One MORE little detail taken care of....

Re: 57A going back together
You guys just made my day-- again! Got a good laugh out of your posts, Shane & Bill.
Yes, I'm getting frustrated, antsy, excited... all of the above. Still some details to work out, but I keep plugging away.
I have to admit, after all the repairs (most likely due to excessive vibration, right?) I did last year, I got pretty good at removing & replacing rivets, both with a hand squeezer and a pneumatic rivet gun, and so was surprised at how "easy" it was to replace that ^%#!! stripped out nut plate.
See? I'm learning!
Thanks again for all the encouragement!

Re: 57A going back together
Yep, your learning, getting to learn the terminology, ie ^%#!!.
Well a plus with the delayed break in flights, ie temps are getting cooler
so engine should be some cooler that doing first flight last summer.
Enjoy!!!!

Re: 57A going back together
So things have slowed down... too many "Change-Of-Season" things to get done. We're still figuring out those pesky steering rods, though I have learned that with the Williams dual toe-brake kit, new rods are supplied and they ARE two different parts -- so that mystery's been solved. (Thanks --again-- Steve Pierce for the older thread on toe brakes and the STC instructions & link!)
So now we're at figuring out if the muffler's outlet is just a bit off in its position, or the muffler needs to move.... all to get the co-pilot's side steering arm to fit in there properly.
Just a few more get-ready-for-winter things to get done and then back to 57A, but now in a COLD hangar.....
