Off topic, but does anyone know why some pipers had the spring connection and some like most PA-22's are solid connections at each end. Not sure I have this right but I noticed the supports that had the springs were usually the lower HP engines. Probably just a trivia topick but noticed this 15 years ago ,any clues

The spring loaded support rods I have seen were on the O-235 engines, Clipper and Colt.

Thanks. Have good movement. Changed all 4 intake gaskets yesterday -- they were like crispy bacon. Popping noise gone. Seems to run better with lower idle as well.

There is a bit of black sludge on the bottom cowl. Some evidence of exhaust blow-by possibly a little more than usual. Also the CHT probs seem "burnt" where they enter the exhaust stacks. Thank you.

This is a great article. Thanks. I do think from time to time we lean too much at lower elevation especially on taxi.
