Default Considering a Tri-Pacer need some advice

    Hi Folks

I am looking at potentially purchasing a Tri-pacer to use in my training, and I'd like to get some input and advice.

At this point I am about 9 hours in on 172s and having a blast, I fly out of CYOO.

I live in the Toronto area and I'd like to find out from the members here the following (thanks ahead of time):

    • The owner is selling as his AME is retiring. Where can I find an AME who knows the tri-pacer to do a inspection and to maintain it in the future?
    • My instructor is happy with the idea of teaching in the TP but would need to be checked out on it himself first, any ideas where I can find someone to do that around my area?
    • What should I be looking out for the AC is a 1958 model. I know there's the strut AD, and the fabric above windshield AD, anything else that needs to be checked in details?

And anything else you know in your wisdom I'd love to hear.

    Thanks!
    Sebastian

    Hi Sebastian,
Have the seller/pilot check out the CFI.
Unless there is some specific Canadian reg saying otherwise, getting checked out in a type only requires you are current in category (airplane) and class (single-engine land.)
There is no "type-rating" for a Tri-Pacer, so anyone who current (and known to be competent)in a Tri-Pacer can check out a pilot who has not flown a Ti-Pacer.
Being diligent is important, of course, your CFI should read the POH/Flight-Manual, have some discussion with the instructing pilot to understand the PA22 peculiarities, etc.
If your CFI flies a 172, he will be fine in a PA22 and probably want to go in as your partner to purchase it because they are so much more fun than a 172.

    Thanks for the tips.

Let's see if we'll end up doing this. Will try to go see the plane and if it looks ok I'll decide on next steps.

Unfortunately, Peter Lubig passed away over 3 years ago. Hopefully, the SWPC- Canada Chapter is still going.

    Hi,

I've only found insurance companies are concerned with others, including flight instructors, have time in type before covering your flights.

Looks like they might not be active right now, the group's FB page and Peter's FB page have no recent posts.
Look at the Chapters page and poke the nearby chapters, maybe you can find something.
And post your questions about who in region can do pre-buy inspections, annuals, training, BFR, etc on the SWPC FB page.

Here's the last info I found for Peter:
