I tried some of the low temp aluminum braze/solder rod that I got at a flea market years ago. Could never get it to flow, maybe never got the base metal clean enough. As long as it is a weldable alloy, I find it just as easy to set the TIG welder up and be done with it. To that end, does that stuff work on the non weldable alloys?

Was your rod flux core? I get my aluminum rod from a welding shop and it's not cheap. I do wire brush and/or sand the base metal first. I preheat the base metal but, not to melting temperature. Then add the rod. I usually get a good flow. It happens fast. I've been gas welding for 60 years and probably not change. In my few attempts at tig I did not get the hang of the foot pedal. Besides I'm too cheap to buy another welding setup. My gas welding equipment is pretty good. I do some wire feed stuff but, it is a real pain to change it over for aluminum.

I did take a gas welding class for aluminum at Oshkosh and learned it was tricky but doable. But, buying a new tank plus getting it refilled was expensive. It would not work for me living on an island. Doing aluminum brazing has been fun and easy. I just made a new air inlet for my carb and cabin heater that mounts on the nose bowl. I wanted it to have a wider opening and taper to the 2 inch ducting. Brazing the .032 aluminum went well.

I have not tried it on anything but 6000 series aluminum. I'm sure it will work on 2000 and 5000 stuff.

This is my carburetor and cabin heat intake. I changed it from a 2 inch inlet to a 2 1/2 inch inlet, hoping to get increased airflow and get more heat in the cabin. Making a tapered inlet was fun. My winter projects are becoming a bit on the anal side......but, I'm having fun.
