I've seen on a number of rebuild threads that the shackle attached to the flap bellcrank has been either replaced by a steel plate attached to the cable before the spring. I even think I've seen what looks like a longer spring hooked from the tank strap direct to the bellcrank ....
What's the thought process on this gents? The first is what I'm working on and the second is what I've seen.
The early airplanes used a standard looking spring and a cable.
Later on Piper started using the spring with the long straight end. That was to clear the flap rod. Don't remember the shackle but has been a long time since I looked at an early wing.
