Question Which alternator and starter? 1955 PA22-150

    Hello All
I'm reassembling a 55 PA22-150 N1741P. While the engine is off getting repaired, I'd like to update the starter, alternator and voltage regulator to something a little more modern and lighter. What have you all done?

B&C Seems to have a nice kit. Does Plane power have anything?

Are there other options I should consider?

    Regards
    Russ

    Skytec starter for sure.
You’ll have to look at who has STC’s for alternators, B&C and Plane Power I think are the only two, but don’t take my word. I did a field approved Denso on mine.

Good threads on both. A Google search is your friend when searching stuff here: "starter site:shortwingpipers.org" I second the SkyTec and this thread gives info on what it takes to install each one with the front mounted oil cooler.

I would go B&C alternator. Google searched: "alternator site:shortwingpipers.org"

Thanks for the reply. Can you share a bit more about your Denso solution? Mostly curious.

That is some great info. I tried the google site trick but so much came back I felt overwhelmed. Thanks for those links I am reading up now.

Tiny 40 amp Denso that is used in reefer units, internally regulated, simple. Wrote up a field approval packet and sent it in. Pretty strait forward. That was when the FSDO’s where willing. Only modifications needed was adding a tab to the mount, and the obvious electrical upgrades for the higher amperage and simpler wiring.

I don't recommend the Plane Power alternator. Mine just failed with 350 hours. This thread on VAF tells the story: https://vansairforce.net/community/s...ht=Plane+Power

My failure had nothing to do with excessive belt tension. I deliberately ran the belt on the loose side.

I have well over 2000 hours on my INTERAV Alternator (made by Prestolite-Leese Neville). No issues. Replaced the brushes as a precaution before I flew the Clipper to Alaska.

I recommend the BandC alternator conversion and the sky tech starter. Both are extremely reliable and highly rated. I recently installed both in the last year and can tell you I have increased starting performance and increased charging performance. I only have about 80 hours on both of them, but so far they have been astounding. Completely transformed my Tri-Pacer. Also, my 150 hp plane is about 15 pounds lighter now and climbs much better than before. What was surprising to me was how much better it landed. I can now keep the nose wheel off the ground for a couple seconds after I set the mains down. That all has to be due to the lighter nose. Previously my plane landed pretty flat. Now I can modulate that and choose if I want to hold the nose off a little longer. Now my plane flies and lands more docilly in my opinion. And that is partially due to the reduction in weight, upfront, and resulting change in weight distribution. I even noticed that my nose Strut is showing more chrome and when I’m dragging it around with the handle on the nose wheel, the nose is lighter.
