Looking for a spin on oil filter for the O-290-D. found one on B&C and would like to know if anyone has any advice on installation. I don't have a rear oil cooler (yet?). Do I need a spacer? What size?
thx - Mike Z
Tough question, probably will provoke a lot of opinions. Do you have the adapter with a viscosity valve? Or has it been modified with an integral accessory case with a vernatherm?
Another tough question? What is your parts cost threshold? Vernatherm cost? Rear mounted cooler? Have you looked at the total costs? how many hours since overhaul?
My opinion as a 290 D owner. The air wolf remote filter if you have have the adapter 62418 and firewall mounted cooler. Includes hoses. Mounts on firewall. No need to upgrade to baffle mounted cooler, no need for vernatherm. It may be less costly even though the air wolf filter cost more initially than the b&c or Casper.
keep the adapter. See attached

Its not that it will fit the 290D. Its all the other airframe stuff piper used on the 290. Steel cooler mounted on the firewall and the duct. Original viscosity valve will work fine. No need to remove anything with the original system. Just add the airwolf, 290 does not make heat like a 320.
If it has been modified to a baffle mounted aluminum oil cooler a vernatherm should have been be installed to prevent cold congealed oil from bursting the cooler. Texas probably not a thing, but in colder climates? If not modified you will have to buy in addition to the filter STC, a vernatherm, oil cooler and stc. And all the adapter plates and bushings.
My 290-D is pretty original without any mods that I can see in the books. It's only been a little over 100 hrs STO and 1000 SMO, with a total of 1700 hours. However, it's been 23 years since it flew. I could go with the rear mounted oil cooler and upgrade the gross weight from 1800 to 1950, but I don't know if I'll be able to find one. Here's a picture of my oil filtration system, which looks identical to the you sketch. I'll start looking at the air wolf fire wall mount system and price that out. I'm concerned about price, but then again not. Looking for good systems.
