Re: Wing tanks in a Vagabond
I notice that you have Univair butt rib and univair tank bay rib around the tank. Is this necessary to put the WagAero tank in?
Since the tank attaches to the spar I assume you just remove the drag and anti-drag wires or is there strut running thru the tank? The last picture almost looks like there is a strut or wire running diagonally thru the tank?

Re: Wing tanks in a Vagabond
There are the two diagonal wires going thru the tank. The other wing that I haven't taken apart yet has the original Piper ribs.
I added the nutplates to the Univair ribs so I would have machine screws holding my wing fairings on. I went with the Univair ribs on the other two just so everything matched. I had to replace all my steel parts on the wings because of pitting under all those coats of dope. The three ribs I replaced were because of old age and lots of cracks and holes not crash damage. I think this area takes a lot of abuse/wear and tear being in the propeller slipstream.

Possible Vagabond wing tank STC
WagAero is considering adding the Vagabond to their STC for the J-3 eight gallon wing tank. Of course it takes a fair amount of paperwork, so they are trying to determine if there would be enough interest to justify committing their resources to the effort.
If you (like me) want a wing tank for your Vagabond, or are seriously considering one in the future, please call or email Tom O'Neill at WagAero.
I'll be posting this on both this and the SWPC board.

Re: Possible Vagabond wing tank STC
I notice the type certificate for Vags under *101, shows a 6 gallon tank.
Would this be an easier route if the materials could be duplicated of course.
Just an observation, I have no idea of the sort of logic driving FAA approvals.

Re: Possible Vagabond wing tank STC
I have the drawing for the Type Certificated tank. It is made of ternplate steel. The tank is no longer available and it requires you to "solder" a fitting into the top of your existing Vag nose tank. To go this route you would need to manufacture a steel tank under the owner produced part rule and install as per the drawing.
The WAGAERO tank is a much better deal if you can get it approved. The tank is a well made aluminum one. The fuel line from the wing tank just Tee's into the out let of the nose tank. Much easier to install.

Re: Possible Vagabond wing tank STC
I contacted Wag Aero about this very subject. Below is my email and their response.

Subject: Wing tanks
I own a Piper PA-17 Vagabond. I have heard Wag Aero is going to STC there J-3 wing tanks for the Vagabond. Is this true and if so, when can I expect to be able to purchase said tank with Vagabond STC?
Thank you,
Charles Aaron
Dear Mr. Aaron:
Thank you for your inquiry.
I have conferred with our Technical Advisor, Tom O’Neill, and he said that that what you have heard about Wag-Aero having an STC for the J-3 wing tanks for the Vagabond is not true.
Tom has heard that Don’s Dream Machine MAY be getting an STC for the wing tanks, so you might want to pursue this rumor further…..maybe do some checking on the internet to see if anyone else has heard this.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.
Sincerely,
Judy Klein

Re: Possible Vagabond wing tank STC
The asterisk means that the Approval "...has been obtained by someone other than the Manufacturer...". That is written right in the TCDS. Yes, you can use this info from the TCDS as Approved Data, but a little more research will turn up Piper Service Memo 28, in which the PA-15 and PA-17 listings both show [wing] fuel tank installations that had been obtained by Stoddard's Aircraft for a 9.5 gallon one-or-both wing installation -a whole bunch of years ago. The Stoddard STC (SA69AL) was reissued in May 1998 to CubCrafters of Yakima. Has anyone contacted them for the possibility of purchasing the tanks all made up under their Certificate (PMA, I presume)? Since Gilbert didn't mention this, it would seem to me that he must have located a Drawing that preceded CubCrafter's issuance. Was this Drawing Stoddard's?

Re: Possible Vagabond wing tank STC
Yes, they bought a whole bunch of STC's from Stoddard's and did not get the drawings for the actual tank with them. Those tanks were made of tern plate and had a very bad service history from the people I know who had them. Too bad we couldn't get the drawings. I looked at buying Clearance Witt's STC's for J-3, 5 and PA12 tanks but by the time you buy them, build them and get everything approved you would have to sell a lot of tanks to get any return. It would be advantageous to get the J3 tank approved at the same time.
