    Default Slick Magneto Service Bulletins.

If you have installed new Slick Magnetos in the last 4 years you might want to read Lycoming Service Bulletin 583 and 584.

I talked to Joe Logie at Unison this morning. Seems their vendor moved and somehow got contamination in the material they make their cams out of and they have seen abnormal wear in mostly the six cylinder mags. There should be replacement cams later this week as a terminating action. The carbon brushes were failing/wearing at a higher rate than Unison liked so they changed them and the new ones are failing faster than the old ones. The new ones can wear to the point of failure within an hour where the old ones could be caught at a bad mag check. There is no terminating action on them as of yet. Improved carbon brush is at least 6 weeks out.

Sounds to me like Slick was not diligent in qualifying new parts sources or materials. NOT good. The customer takes it on the chin for their lack of quality control. New brushes wearing out within an hour indicates to me they did NO checking at all of their new material. I think it is time for their ISO-9000 auditor to get involved.

While we're on this subject, ...when I started out, I was told the Bendix mags were better than Slicks. Do you guys have a preference?

First hand update.... we ordered a Lycoming factory overhauled 0-360 for our Grumman Tiger (we have a short wing too) with new slick mags - we have 11 hours total time on them since completing the installation. Checked the mags today per the service bulletin. Both of the brushes were worn significantly with lots of carbon dust and all the bad stuff they show in the servcie bulleting pictures. Guess we'll call Lycoming tomorrow as see what they have to say. If you read the bulletin, it looks like if you make it 250 hours your OK... ours came up a little short of that!

Thanks for the update. I have a set of old carbon brushes. I think I am going to pull the magnetos off the Luscombe I just finished restoring and swap them.

This sucks. Not only do I now have to comply with this, but I also have to incorporate ECI's service bulletin 08-1 by replacing my new cylinders with only 2 hours on them. I just overhauled this engine and now have to replace all the jugs. At least ECI held up to their warranty and are replacing my jugs at no charge.

Parts are now available to terminate the two Service Bulletins.
