Default Wheel retainer nut cotter pin tricks

'56 PA22 - I have to shorten my cotter pins to get them into the 1.5" axle wheel retainer nut hole. The rim limits the length of the cotter pin. In order to get it in the hole, I have to shorten it so that it will line up straight. That results in very short little nubs protruding on the other side to be bent over. Very short. Like 1/4" at most. Are there any tricks to this to get a longer end out to fold over?

If I understand your issue, I put a slight bend in the middle of the cotter key.
That allows me to clear the rim to get it in and out the other hole.

I usually use the slight bend method as well but I have been known to use 2 short cotter pins if I get caught without long ones on hand.

What exactly do these clips hold? I cant find a drawing that explains it.

They keep the nut from turning on the axle once the proper torque is set on the bearing. Usually a Cotter pin is used that transverses the center of the axle. I have also seen similar external clips made with welding rod when a shaft through the axle is needed for skis.
