Re: Elevator trim cable double wrap
I was looking at the drawings here, can you run me through what all has to be done to install the double wrap pulley system, I have a 1950 PA20, s/n 397 with the single wrap pulley, I was looking at the drawings and do you need to weld brackets into the tail for the extra pulley? Is this something that neeeds to be done with the aircraft uncovered?

Re: Elevator trim cable double wrap
Nicka,
The short answer would be YES, however, there have been many repairs / mods accomplished over the years and fabric pached after the event! In any case, I just scrapped out a Tri-Pacer fuselage (rusted & bent) and I kept the trim system for future trades / sale. PM me if interested, includes dual pulleys, brackets etc.

Stainless is a bit more brittle and wears worse in the tight corners. Evidently someone converted your Pacer to double groove or maybe your serial number falls in the ones done at the factory. Use the old cable to pull the new cable forward and through the headliner. It is a real challenge to change on a covered airplane but very doable. These pictures might help as well.
Thanks again, Steve! I chatted with Tony today and my new cable is in the mail! Unfortunately, it seems that the true work lays ahead! Glad my bride is a petite lady, and she has already been advised that she may be exploring the tail area from the inside!

Re: Elevator trim cable double wrap
Mark, Now is the time for looking into the "small crew chief" concept. Crawling into the "hell hole" or in the case of early Pacers, back through the baggage area to access the the trim cable routing is really fun! It will feel really good when done!
I'm planning to make a trip out your way in January, lets hook up.

Re: Elevator trim cable double wrap
I haveinstalled the double groove trim system in several PA16s and their fuselage is identical to the early PA20. From memory all I remember doing is welding the two pulley brackets just forward of the jackscrew and cable guards which are just pieces of welding rod at the edges of the jackscrew pulley. The rest is changing parts.

Re: Elevator trim cable double wrap
I don't know if this is the most current post for this subject,
But I have a Clipper that I would like to do this trim upgrade and need help getting the bracket that is welded to the cross tube at the rear of the aircraft.
It is PN 12960. It holds 2 small pulleys that guide the trim cable after it comes off the main double groove pulley
There is no detailed print I can find on the piper CDs.
Does anyone have this part available for sale or willing to let me borrow so I could copy it?
Thanks, Ted.

Ted,
I harvested the parts off of a wrecked Tri-pacer.

Re: Elevator trim cable double wrap
Clayton,
I might have to go that route.
Did you do your 337 form yet for this?
I noticed on Gilberts 337 form he posted that there may have been a drawing # mistake for line #4.
I think it should be drawing #12989 and not #12988.
Don't know if it matters or not.
Ted.

You are correct, it should be 12989.
