Per J Ryd, Original valve can be fixed with parts called out. There are instructions in this site with details how to disassemble and service.

...and it's an easy fix. However, if you want to throw money at it, you can buy one of the replacement valves. I've not done that but it wouldn't be the worst money spent.

Re: Fuel Selector Repair
Is the consensus that a repair to the fuel selector detent issue falls under Preventive Maintenance, and logged by the owner?

It is not junk if it is maintained and serviced regularly.

Looking at Part 43 appendix A it doesn't appear to be a preventive maintenance item to me.

I didn’t realize Steve made a fuel selector valve. I thought they only fuel system part they made was the gascollator .

Re: Fuel Selector Repair
This brings up a good point, which has caused more accidents, the original fuel valve, or the gascolator?
The brass plug fuel valve has been the cause of many many fatal accidents (the reason for the airworthiness directive) it has to be close to the number of fatal accidents caused by the original gascolator. Maybe replacing the fuel valve with a better designed valve is a good idea, like replacing the original gascolator with a Steve design.

If you could justify it with the Coleal letter I suppose. It is more of a question for your IA as he/she has to follow it. Remember that the FAA doesn't consider the "limited to" statement in part 43 Appendix A to be controlling. Like so many things the FAA leaves a lot to be interpreted. As only a private pilot I personally would tend to think it is more than preventive, as it sounds like Steve does.
