Addressing the caliper/tire rub when installing bigger tires on the 40-84 wheels used in te Univair/Cleveland brake STC. Having some seperate brake discs and a set of Pacer 40-84 wheels per the Univair STC I figured out that you can get the 2 5/16" brake disc offset like most other brake set ups by using the 164-03300 brake discs in place of the 2" clearance of the 164-01900 brake discs that come on the 40-84 wheels. The discs are less than $100 if you buy Rapco or APS from Aircraft Spruce. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catal...clickkey=47623 https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catal...clickkey=47623

The 164-03300 brake disc has the same hole pattern as the 164-01900. This picture shows the two discs on top of each other over the wheel.

This looks like the perfect solution to the rub issue I have after trying to install Desser 8.50s on my PA22/20 with dual puck brakes. My plane currently has 3 spacers totalling 5/16" between the torque plate and flange on the gear. So removing those and installing the -3300 rotor should give me 5/16" more tire clearence and keep the rotor/Caliper relationship as it is now.

Does anyone know if the Rapco brake rotors come ready to install, or do you have to paint the rotor surfaces that aren't in contact with the pads?

Minimal clearence, these tires have enough sidewall runout that they touch in a couple spots

    Torque plate spacers x3 ~ 5/16"

And a picture cause the plane looks so much better with the 8.50's and no wheel pants. I weighed the 6.0s, wheelpants, mounts, hardware. Saved 17.9lbs switching to the 8.50s!

They come with some sort of plating or finish. No paint needed.

That's great news. I ordered them last night. Should be ready to pick up today. Hope to get them on very soon.

OK - Now Who can give me specifics on what pivot pins(if required), plate spacers (if required), and most importantly, rotors(with larger offset) to do this same thing with 40-97D Cleveland wheels !! Please !! Desser 850x6 Smooth Tundras on and not enough clearance between brake(030-06315) and Wheel(40-97D) with current Rotors (164-02601 ) with a 2" offset (not enough offset). PLEASE !!

Not familiar with the part numbers you have listed. Is it a double puck brake?

PA-22-20-150. Univar conversion to taildragger with Cleveland Wheels and single puck Cleveland brakes. Can't read numbers on brakes(got those from Cleveland- could be wrong) - Cleveland wheel numbers are identified correct. Rapco brake disc number also correct and verified. Thanks Daryl

I don't have much experience with the single pucks.

Finally got everything installed and a moment to follow up here. With my set up, Univair gear, Univair dual puck brake kit, and Cleveland 40-84 wheels, the 164-03300 rotors worked out perfectly to create clearence between the Aero Classic 8.50s and Caliper.
    DSC_0278_4.JPG

My plane had 3 spacers between the flange on the gear and the torque plate. (Note, I spoke to Univair and the standard set up with double puck brake kit is 2 spacers.) Total thickness 0.30 in. The same as the difference in rotor offset between the 164-01900 and 164-03300
    DSC_0275_4.JPG
    DSC_0272_4.JPGDSC_0274_4.JPG

I removed all of the spacers and replaced the torque plate to gear bolts with shorter ones. This kept the relationship of the Caliper to rotor, and Caliper Pin engagement the same as it had been on my plane with an additional 0.30in of tire to caliper clearence.

The Rappco rotors are very nice looking and have a nickel plating, so you do not need to paint them. Note that in their application guide the 164-03300 rotor is only specified for the 40-84 wheel. The application is for a PA-25.

I spoke with ABI about the rotor spacers and they said they were for the 40-65 and 40-70 Cleveland Wheel. They "think it will fit" the 40-84 wheel. Also to get 0.25in of offset you have to stack 2 spacers. So in my case the replacement rotors were a cleaner install, no spacers on the rotor or the torque plate, and cheaper. Do your research and confirm what will work best for your set up, though. No 2 planes are exactly the same.

Thanks Moto657, Excellent - I'll research rotors for my Cleveland 40-97D wheels and Rapco RA164-02601 Rotors
