Purchased a 1948 PA-17 Vagabond yesterday. This is the third airplane I have owned and first fabric/tailwheel airplane. It has less than 1800 total time. Took this photo in the shop where it had the crankshaft, cam, new slick mags with new harness/plugs, and lifters replaced in the C-85 engine. They also installed new struts along with other work and annual. It has standard tank with no electrical system. Purchased the Vagabond because I like how it looks, wanted to learn how to fly a tail-dragger, and eventually restore.

When I posted this morning thinking 30 year old Ceconite would need to be replaced in the next few years, this is my first fabric covered airplane. Talked to a friend today that recovers airplanes and he told me the Ceconite can last much longer than 30 years. This Vagabond was owned by a gentleman in Minnesota for the last 47 years. He said it has always been hangared in a dry hangar and only stayed outside for a few nights when he went to Oshkosh.

    Thanks,

Just to set your mind at ease. I recovered a Tripacer in 1978 with Stits products (the fabric is identical to ceconite) and it still looks (and tests) as good as the day I pushed it out of the workshop. Congratulations on the 17 .....would love to own one but they are like rocking horse manure in Aus.

Talked to a friend today that has a Colt with Ceconite installed on the wings 1968, still in good condition. Don't see many Vagabonds locally either.

You will enjoy flying it! Just watch out for the slightly faster sink rate on approach/roundout if you haven't flown a shortwing Piper before.
Ceconite say their fabric will last a very long time if it has had the recommended number of coats of silver applied.
It is UV that damages fabric, natural or otherwise. The silver keeps the UV out.
