Default Adapter to fit 6" tire on a 4" wheel?

    Hi,

Are there any spacers or adapters available to fit 6" tires onto 4" wheels?
I searched the forum and could not find anything on the subject.

Lamb adapters were available to adapt 3” wheels to take 800x4 tires. There are also adapter rings for 10” tailwheel rims to go from 10SC tires to commercial 10X3.50X4 tires, but I’ve never heard of adapter rings to go from 4” wheels to 6” tires.

    Hi John,
Can you explain where you would need such a thing?
    Is this for a Shortwing?
Please give us some background, I have never heard of this before.

I think he is asking about something like this http://russaircraft.com/adapter.htm
Only rather that for a tailwheel as this is, to adapt the 4” Goodrich wheels to allow the installation 6” tires. I’ve never seen 4” to 6” adapter rings. Back in the “40s and 50s, a guy named Lamb made adapter rings and had STC approval for them to go from the old 3” wheels on Aeronca C3s and Rearwins and others, to use the more typical (then) 8.00x4 Cub tires.

I don’t think a 4” to 6” adapter is practical as the torque from breaking would likely rotate the ring on the wheel and break the stem off the tube.

While expensive, a better alternative is buying one of the STCs to install 6” wheels and disk brakes.

    John,

This is not an adapter, last week replaced original 4" wheels/brakes with new 6" Grove wheels/disc brakes on the Vagabond. Expensive STC, but easy installation using original toe brake cylinders. Grove is great to work with, too.
