Pulled the boot cowl to gain access to install wiring for the landing/taxi, & strobe lights; as well as ADS-b out. Not a lot of pictures as it's just a rat's nest behind the panel. I did spend some considerable time cleaning it up and it did help.
For controlling the landing and taxi lights I picked up this micro pulse switch. It internally strobes the circuits out of that tiny little package. You can select between landing, taxi, both, both blinking at 44 fpm, alternate at 44 fpm, 88 fpm, & 120 fpm. 20200209_101000.jpeg20200209_104355.jpeg

Will you need to get a field approval for that pulse switch?

Maxpulsemaxdim.com - have an STC for the Maxpulse switch - which appears similar. This covers the PA16 as we as the more popular shortwings. They also sell a specific shortwingpiper dimmer switch - although I personally have no idea what it replaces.

Probably. I was so excited for the wigwag capability and thus the greater visibility that I didnt stop to think of the paperwork side.
We'll see how amenable the FSDO is to enhancing safety.

I don’t see a problem doing a DER approval or a DAR field approval, or using the AC43-210 flow chart, you might be able to consider it a minor alteration.

I've been bouncing it around my head whether it is s minor or not. Does alter the basic design of the electrical system? Not really, but it does alter the function of the landing and taxi lights...

I've been through the field approval process using the AC43-210 as a guideline before. That's how I got my denso alternator on. So if i do determine it's not a minor I'll just have to spend an evening drawing up some paperwork.

But landing and taxi light (at least on the PA-16) were optional equipment, and aren’t part of required equipment in 91.205.

The landing light is required equipement on the PA-22, but not the taxi light.
I had a discussion on this with a fellow IA. And basically we both agreed that it boils down to, it's just a switch. It just happens to be a switch with an extra function, but still just a switch.
So the consensus and what I'm going with is that it's a minor alteration and will be just a log book entry
