Clipper Cabin Heat Box - looking for photos

Our PA-16's cabin heat system does not perform as we'd like it to: Sometimes it does not close or open correctly. :worry:  :worry: :icon_cool: :worry: :icon_cool:

The heat box (at the forward facing side of the firewall) looks like it's been "fixed" a few times before.
Inside the box, there are two flaps, the upper one being actuated by the heater control cable. The flaps can be seen through the grill from cabin.
The lower one seems to be fixed at the fore end only and has a small amount of flex and quite some resistance when trying to "open" it upwards.
Also, the Bowden control cable is fixed with an ugly bracket, which does not look original, and some safety-wire only.
Before trying to fix anything, we'd like to check against another Clipper to see what it should (or could) look like in working condition.

Does anyone have some pictures of the cabin heat box? Are there any drawings on "the drawing CD"(*)?

(*) We only have the payment confirmation for the CD, but the CD is yet to be found...

I found the Clipper heat box mechanism to be troublesome. I replaced it the PA20-22 box which is an exact replacement but the opening /closing mechanism is different. No problems in about 2200 hours.

Thank you Gilbert! Just texted a friend with a Pacer for photos / part numbers but this will take a couple days at least. Will let you guys know how it's going...

Flo,

The Drawings are in the SWPC Vagabond CD. The top level part 70232 (-4 for the clipper) box assembly is made from the 12343 plate, 12058 elbow (specific to the -4), 70251 arm, 70242 box and 70261 valve. All the dimensions and materials are the same. Looking at the box that I have for a 50 pacer it appears that they did not attach the 12058 elbow to the valve but riveted an angle to it. As the material is hot rolled steel .020" thick, you should be able to fabricate one for under the $400.00 univair price.

Vagabondblues,

Thanks a lot! It looks like our Clipper is completely different to any of those. I'm comparing it to the Piper #11966 drawing. Looks like I'll have to get my hands on the #70232 drawing or find a PA-20/22 replacement (looks like Piper #13358?) and make it fit.
