Hi!
Long time listener, first time caller (New to the forum) :)
I have recently acuired a PA-22, standard 150hp with no modifications other than float fittings. The plane have been true an extensive renovation and have been converted to experimental category.

Im in search of a set of skis, but first id like to know any inforamtion regarding the usage of skis for the plane. I have heard people put hoses and clamps on the nose damper for instance.
Where can i obtain the drawings, Dwg. 11R1117, Dwg. 11R951?
Im located in Sweden and there is a Airwortiness suplement stating i need to replace or modify the landing gear, Dwg 14298

Hi Jornen and welcome. Have you searched "skis" in the search box in the upper right hand corner? Sorry, no ski experience here in Texas. ;)

Not familure with those drawings?

I ran three Airglas 2000 skis on my 1959 PA22-160 for many years. These skis are installed via a STC from airglass

Search my posts as I’ve made many over the years with photos etc.

Thank you everybody!
I have searched the forum, and i found your thread Rocky, however the pictures are not visible anymore.

I see you have uncovered legs for the skis, was this part of the STC or just that you used a complete main gear for skis and another for wheels?

Any handling issues or things to take note from? I would not say im experienced flying on skis but i have some time in a Citabria 7ECA (100hp) with straight skis, lets just say im hoping for at least not any less of performance with the 150hp tripacer...

How about nose ski/wheel shimmy and steering on the ground? any weak points and no-no,s?

Big thanks everybody, hoping to get mine on skis this winter/spring :)

The uncovered main gear is an Alaskan thing I suppose, makes it easier to inspect/preflight the tubing and removes the bother of the fabric being beat up and needing repair.

Your going to need your leg muscles to push that ski around on the snow but in the air the nose ski can want to swing around to the stop once it gets moving one way, you jist have to stay on it and be ready to push it back with the other foot. It becomes natural after a while.

What I’ve found flying with super cubs etc is with care I can turn in half the distance they do but you can’t turn too tight going too fast. There is a learning curve on how much power and how much weight you keep on the nose ski via power/elevator position.

I recommend you look into disabling your aileron/rudder interconnect. Plenty of threads here about that.

I’ll dig up some photos and post them.

Are you familure with AC43.13, there is a section on rigging skis including the nose skis.

I had a Airglass nose fork on my 22 and it stood the nose about 4 inches taller than stock which I believe was beneficial for takeoff angle of attack. I also kept a 4” rubber hose snubber on my nose strut that was slipped on before installing the lower section into the upper. I’ll get you a couple photos. With the taller fork I was able to use the longer seaplane prop 82/42 and with this prop she really ripped off the snow !

At some point I found a crack in my main gear and sent it in and had all the FA Dodge rough service mods done: a doubler inserted into the axle, some reinforcing straps and gussets added here and there. Again I get photos.
