Legacy GPS Use

Was cleaning out the hangar and found my old Lowrance AirMap2000. Unit fired up and acquired a fix within 30 seconds which got me thinking if I could repurpose this as a marine unit? Lowrance has a pretty good specs page for this receiver ... Does anyone know how to determine compatibility of mapping software and a GPS receiver? Or is it strictly proprietary?
