PA22-150 Alternator replacement/rear mounted oil cooler

First post here hopefully someone can help me out.

I am working on replacing an alternator on a pa22-150 with a Lycoming o-320 a2a engine in it. This alternator was installed with a conversion from the generator in 1966, there is an STC for it. The alternator part number is ALK-5001S and I have called overhaul shops across the country to find somewhere that can repair to no avail. The alternator does not show up in any systems as something that can be repaired for airworthiness.

I have found an STC through talking to Hartzell that allows for installing an alternator kit from the original generator set up (which we would need to purchase brackets and hardware to revert back to) but this STC requires a rear mounted oil cooler system. I am not having luck finding the rear mounted cooler STC either.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of routes I can take in trying to properly fix this thing as efficiently and cost effectively as possible?

I also have done some research using the engine serial number on Lycoming's website and it's not even in their system.

Any help/pointing in the right direction would be incredibly helpful.

PA 22-150 , O-320 A2A previous installed alternator is a Prestolite ALK-5001S, current STC for new alternator is SA10682SC which involves part number SAL12-70 (which is a Hartzell alternator) the STC for the rear mounted oil cooler is SA01863SE (which does not provide instructions for install, just where to get them, which I can't seem to find)

Thanks a ton in advance, this has been a big headache and I'm still learning to navigate through the General Aviation world. I apologize if this is a nuisance post!

I would avoid a rear mounted oil cooler if Possible, it was all the rage a while back but it is a major pain to work on the mags once it is installed. Check B&C alternators.

Try ACC Rebuilders in Memphis. 901-774-5874 Or email Ronnie Charnes at accremfg@att.net

I wouldn’t mention aircraft.

From AAC web site.

That is one reason I put on the Sutton exhaust. No AD, easy access to the rear of engine and weight reduction.

I would get the alternator you have repaired. I can bet it was automotive to be began with and someone like my Dad listed can repair it. I would recommend the B&C alternator if you go new/STC'd. Comes with everything to install with your front mounted oil cooler. I own the STC for the rear mounted oil cooler. It is installed behind cylinder number 4 with a doubler and is a pretty simple modification.

Just started researching alternator replacements ... my ALK-5001 off a Stude' is getting flaky and maybe was the culprit in my fried SkyBeacon. Is B and C still up and around? Their website is not coming up.

Chris

They are and the best option in my opinion. I wonder if this weekend storms had an effect on their website server.

I still have a generator. But when it is time for me to change, B&C is who I intend to use.
They have great customer support and are very responsive. Their oil filter adapter is solidly constructed.

Must've heard us ... they're back up.

ForgeFlightWorks, sounds like you have the Moody Larson alternator STC? I’m wondering if anyone out there switched out a Prestolite with the B&C. Did the Prestolite mounting hardware work with the B&C alternator (case mounted)? Also, if you already have an alternator installed, do you need B&C’s electronics package? I put these questions to B&C but they said it may be awhile before they get back to me.

Chris

The B&C had everything to mount the alternator in the kit. All I remember on the wiring side was circuit breaker, wire and connectors. Do they still have the installation instructions on their website? If not I can post.

Steve,

TJ from B&C got back to me and sent some drawings and a parts list. As far as the electrical package, I think my present alternator setup will take care of that. He couldn’t say if a Prestolite mounting bracket would work with the BC400, but he would be surprised if it did. Gonna have to compare the drawing to what’s bolted to my engine.

Regards,
Chris

Best alternator installation for a PA22 in the business. Mine works flawlessly. 13.6 VDC showing on the Original cigarette lighter moniter continuously. This stuff is just top shelf. My opinion.
