Panel Labels

Hi Steve P,
I noticed in a photo you posted a while back that the control labels (carb heat knob, etc) are very smart.
At least I think they are labels and not printed directly to the panel.
I have looked for "white text on red label" tape for my handheld electronic label machines, but no joy.
Could you tell me, and share with the group, where you bought/got/made those labels.
See viewtopic.php?f=22&t=383 for the image I refer to.

Anyone else who has suggestions for really sharp labels (white text on red background) please speak up, I'm starting to look really hard at my wife's Dymo embossing label tool. Now there's a vintage look for an old plane!

Thanks,
Glen

Yeah, me too! I have a nice panel in the Pacer except that whoever placed the labels clearly finished off a bottle of "Old Factory Whistle" before starting. I could use red or clear backround. Thanks

looks like original silk screening to me....

you can have silkscreens made.. but i bet its spendy... but sharp looking.... darn.... another thing I need to set up for! dickblick?(showing my age) probably has the supplies to DIY

did just get a cool label maker off ebay($177. buy.com)..... dymo Rhino 6000 http://www.rhinolabeling.com , labels are very permanent and also it can print right on a heat shrink tube, for doing wiring harnesses and such..... and they do have red labels, black print?....

That is a slick label maker Mike. I have one I bought many years ago that works alright. It prints white on clear, black on clear etc. depending on the tape you use. My Pacer has the original silk screen labels. Aero Graphics can print off a silk screen type label that you rub off and you can clear coat. I labeled all the knobs On a Luscombe I finished restoring last year and it worked well. http://www.aerographics.com/ Nice work and inexpensive.

I made all the labels/placards for my airpalne using adhesive vinyl for inkjet printers. I bought the materials from http://www.papilio.com.

This place also sells a UV protective clear coat that is applied after the printer ink dries. It was a little challenging to get the colors to match the paint, but if you have a colored background and want white letters, you have make the background of the label match the paint and use white font. I got everything to match pretty well. I used Microsoft Word to create all the lables except for the fuel selector label. I had to used a Cad program for that to get the clocking correct.

Papilio also sells a silver adhesive printable foil. This is what I used to make the decals for my yokes. I printed the lettering outline and cut them out with an exacto knife. Stuck them on the yokes and coated it with clear urethane. They turned out ok. I wish I had a steadier hand.

I have attached some pictures of the labels to help you get an idea. I decided to make my own because of the cost associated with having custom ones made. Now that I have all the templates (using MS Word), if one peels, I can print another one.

I used the label interior label set from AeroGraphics, and they look just like the original. Have them e-mail you the sheet before they send it, because you will have to change some of the labels and probably add some. For the larger labels, ask for NO background, as it is difficult to get the air bubbles out and clear backgrounds on the smaller ones.

On a couple of aircraft I have had my local vinyl sign maker print them. All that goes on the panel is the leters. your choice of color. I was very pleased with the quality. Larry Huntley

I did a little more research on handheld label printers: I have a Brother P-Touch PT-85 that prints very nice labels, but the Brother "M" tape it requires does not include white text on red background.
The Brother TC series of laminated tapes include White on Red (TC54Z1), but those don't fit my machine.
So off to EBay to find a Brother PT6/PT8/PT10/PT12/PT12N/PT15/PT20/PT25/PT150 or PT170K handheld printer.
If anyone out there has one they want to sell give me a shout!
I think the red will be a close match to my lower panel, anyway One For Papa is a sporty old gal, not a beauty queen, she'll be fine with nearly-the-same-red. Better than the few old dymo labels she's sporting now!
Thanks all for your help, this is such a great forum full of fine helpful folks. I wish I could buy you all a beer. Come out to Oregon and I will!

I use aerographics in Denver. Didn't buy there standard 22 sheet. Asked for exactly what I needed and got it. The breaker strip they did all in one piece spaced perfectly. Took me about 15 minutes to install everything. I think cheap too. Don't forget to order all the others you need, strut, gas tank, tail, name ect. they can do them all and if you really want to go crazy they can do it as stencils so you can airbrush em on. BTW, I ordered 2 sets of all the little stuff just in case, but only needed a couple of letters from the backup.

Hi Gang,
Yeah EBay! I just purchased a Brother PT-6 Electronic Label Maker. $7.99 plus $10 S/H!
Now to buy a couple cassettes of TC45Z1 White-on-Red label tape ($18) and I'm good to go!

Thanks again for all the suggestions, and sharing the panel pix. I'll try to remember to shoot before and after pix and post 'em in this thread after I finish the panel.

GG
