skySensor installed

1/2 hour install during our recent annual, oddly they used 6-32 screws instead of the 8-32 used on the skyBeacon, so I had to re-do the Helicoils.

Now ADS-B in comes on with the light switch, TSO compliant, seems to have better reception...

uAvionix Sentry available $300 or best offer... thanks

Glad these are for certificated aircraft. This is next on my upgrade list.

I made some glovebox doors with a circuit breaker panel for the glovebox on a 50 Pacer. Not using them and they are not far from you if you want. I also have all the bucks that I used to form the panel overlays and cutouts for the glove boxes and the center instrument panel.

Beautiful aluminum work reminds me of the Gov't stuff I used to see 30 years ago in another life. So well made, complex, very robust stuff that few can reproduce. I might ask, though, have you doubled the weight of the device in mounting it?

Sorry for the thread drift. These are up for grabs. Made from same thickness as original 1950 Piper pacer glove boxes, just moved the breakers up into the glovebox. With the trig radio and transponder installed its just a fraction of the original Nuclear age Narco Omni glass tube radio which weighed about 65lbs. and had three boxes to operate. The original door latch would not hold it shut, so I made a bracket with two screws to hold it in.

I thought if he was going to upgrade to uavonix AV30C and skysensor he could use them and keep the original look of his aircraft.

Any installation tips for those of us waiting in the wings for the skySensor?

Installation is about the same for SkSensor as it is for SkyBeacon. On the PA-22, you will likely need to cut out a spacer the shape of the fairing. The firing has a bulkhead that the original light mounts to that is slightly recessed. You need a spacer to move the mounting surface flush with the fairing. If you don't have a spare wire going out to the tip you will have a choice of strobe is on anytime the tip light is on or no strobe.

Have you configured the unit to your plane - use the app and your phone to specify parameters? If you’re having trouble with sky sensor and it is powered up, you need to connect your map software via wifi

Hope that works for you

Mine has worked well for the past year. No issues except operator error when I forgot to select it as the Wi-Fi.

I’m in the process of installing mine only to discover my 5-year old SkyBeacon was dead … no lights or xmit signal. Anyone else have this problem? I don’t know how long it’s been dead. UAvionix says $550 to repair as it’s out of warranty.

In the past my checklist item was to verify nav lights on by checking the interior lights but I guess I need to check lights on the walk around … No telling how long I’ve been non-compliant.

Chris

Yeah, first thing I did … pulled it off the wing and connected directly to a battery. Dead as a doornail.

Chris

Update: Uavionix sent me a new unit … mine must’ve really gone south … no charge. I had sent in a Mod 3 that had about 100 hours on it and I received a Mod 8, so they’ve probably made a few improvements.

SkySensor installed. I thought the anti-collision light circuit was only a switching (on/off) function so I ran it along some antenna cables. Well, it actually pulses the lights so NOW my RADIOS sound LIKE this WHEN the LIGHTS are FLASHING. I wish uAvionix mentioned this in the instructions ... I would have run a shielded wire!

Regards,
Chris

disconnect the strobe and that will likely go away. Anytime you connect LED lights it is best to run the wires as far away from any others, especially antennas. It is also best to run grounds all the way back to a common ground to eliminate any feedback in the system. This is a Major Alteration, you should have your IA review it and fill out a 337 to return the aircraft to service. It is not preventive maintenance that a pilot owner can do without supervision.

I have the skySensor and it works fine. No problem with the radio, etc. There are several frequency checks you must perform per the installation instructions to make sure there’s no interference.

David,

Did you run a seperate wire for the strobes or did you wire the strobes into the nav light circuit?

Regards,
Chris

I ran separate wires for strobe and power, actually I ran a 3 wire shielded cable, power for the nav/adsb, power for the strobe, ground and shield.

Sorry for the delay. I will ask short wing specialist A&P/IA Tom Young who handled the install.

No worries… I actually contacted uAvionx. I was curious why they did not specify a shielded wire in the installation instructions … they reply I got implied a shielded wire was not absolutely necessary (the exact words were, “it wouldn’t hurt”) but distance from any coax was, particularly any runs in parallel. The tech also said have a “separate dedicated ground wire for the skysensor,” which I’m not sure what to make of as each unit is grounded to the wingtip.

Regards,
Chris

It’s been my experience troubleshooting ground problems on the fuel tank sensors and wing tip lights that the wings don’t necessarily have a good ground to the fuselage.
I always run a separate ground from the wing to the central grounding point behind the instrument panel.

Gilbert is spot on. Aluminum corrosion at joint interfaces makes electrical signal or power conduction a problem. Run a separate ground wire for reliability.

I got mine installed and it appears to be working correctly. However, I can't figure out how to connect it to my Garmin Pilot app on Android. Seems like it connects through WiFi, but wont show up in the app. Curious what EFB everyone is using and how you got it to connect.

I had the same issue with ForeFlight … had to add the SkySensor in the FF settings even though my phone was connected to the SkySensor’s Wi-Fi.

Regards,
Chris

Well....if you're using Garmin Pilot for Android you're SOL as it won't work with the SkySensor.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

The Android OS version of Garmin Pilot is not compatible with third party ADS-B receivers, there is no way to connect the Garmin Pilot app to the SkySensor receiver.

Best Regards,

Russ
